About the Author

John Ousterhout is the Bosack Lerner Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University. His current research focuses on new software stack layers to allow datacenter applications to take advantage of communication and storage technologies with microsecond-scale latencies. Ousterhout's prior positions include 14 years in industry, where he founded two companies (Scriptics and Electric Cloud), preceded by 14 years as Professor of Computer Science at U.C. Berkeley. He is the creator of the Tcl scripting language and is also well known for his work in distributed operating systems and storage systems. Ousterhout received a BS degree in Physics from Yale University and a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has received numerous awards, including the ACM Software System Award, the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award, the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, and the U.C. This book does not consider functional programming, or the fact that terrible software in modern times is often the result of layers of incorrect abstraction that are often induced by the overuse of "object oriented" (OO) programming techniques. Instead, it takes OO programming for granted as being a good thing (visible in its preferences for two OO languages, C++ and Java), and then it reasons in that domain, making it totally uninteresting to many potential readers. The book also assumes that formal design doesn't work (he calls it "waterfall"), and takes alternatives for granted. I doubt the author is even aware of his inherent bias, but it is incredibly strong.

Since 2016, my job has been to teach software design at the advanced level to professional engineers. I run workshops, speak at tech companies, and blog on software design. So when I heard of this book, I naturally took a look to see if I could recommend it to students.PoSD is best read as a tactical guide of how-to’s. About a quarter of it is spent on naming and comments, and much of the rest is about specific patterns. His few attempts to jump from tactical advice to principles are either done by trying to blur together similar-sounding tips, or are hamstrung by his inability to see the meaning of a program beyond the code. He demonstrates the lack of principles comically in Chapter 19, where he promises to apply the books’ “principles” to several software trends, and then fills the rest of the chapter with standard (but solid) advice on unit-testing and OOP, with nary a reference to the rest of the book. On the whole, the book’s advice is higher-level than beginner books like Clean Code, but most of its contents will be familiar to a senior software engineer, and the novel parts are hit-and-miss.A huge underlying theme of the book, and one of its few novel parts, is Ousterhout's idea of deep modules: modules should have an implementation which is simpler than the interface. This sounds elegant, and impossible to argue with. Unfortunately, it's also objectively wrong. Further inspection shows that actually many common abstractions like stacks fail this test, and even Ousterhout's own example of a deep module has an interface which is far more complex than he claims. Overall, Ousterhout misses the deeper notions of complexity, the kind which is about what a piece of code means and how it may be used and how it may be changed, rather than the kind that can be gleaned by glancing at the code. This is a major blindspot which damages the book significantly, and limits his ability to give precise advice.When Ousterhout tells you do reduce complexity, it often sounds like telling someone going on a date or interview "just be yourself:" the advice only works if you already understand complexity.Despite that, there is a lot of really good advice in this book, and it's explained with clear and concrete examples. I especially enjoyed his sections on comments. While I don't agree with everything in that section either, there are some really good points that I hope become common practice, and which I have not seen others write about. His chapter on performance engineering is also gold.So, read the book, savor the advice, but take his justifications with a grain of salt and know that they're not universals, because there are deeper principles to be found.I wrote a much longer review on my blog, going into these points in more detail. But it's one of the only books of its kind out there. Hence, I am proud to recommend it to all junior-level software engineers.

It may be suited for entry entry level engineers, and they find it an interesting read. I didn't learned anything, I am afraid, and was irritated at times when I disagreed with authors opinion that was being passed off as facts.What bothered me the most is the lack of rigor, for instance, he advocates for incremental design which costs 10-20% and if you don't it will make you 10%-20% slower after some point. The only motivation a graph with no units. It may matter if is 10% or 20%, as that is after all a factor of 2. Also, it's not really clear that once in a while 10% investment, let's call it 45 minutes is a very different cost than a recurring daily 45 minute overhead due to cost being a mess. I don't have any data to dispute the numbers, btw, but on the other hand, I have not seen any studies to support it either, and the author does not tell us where he is getting this from.His advise of avoiding lots of small functions as it means you will be bouncing all over the place to understand the code is not necessarily wrong. It adds lots of boiler plate, for example. Using an argument from the book itself, however, you could argue that good names and comments would mean you didn't need to read those lower level functions. The counter argument is that smaller functions are much easier to unit test. Then you have the unit test vs integration test discussion of course.There are 3 chapters on comments. Why?! I am towards the "good code is self-documenting" end of the spectrum, although I would say a lot of comments is often (but certainly not always) a code smell that suggest refactoring using better names, extracting code to function etc. I do like how he describes good comments as either lower or higher level than the code.The text editor example that runs through most of the book becomes trite. What I find way more interesting is when he talks about his experience with TCL (design mistakes, or the benefits derived from unit test suite), or towards the end RAMCloud and a specific implementation detail.

It gives very practical ways that I can reduce complexity in my software.The author puts such a high value value on simplicity and it's so refreshing when so many of today's "best practices" lead to complexity.This book is helping me become more design oriented and strategic -- and less of a "tactical tornado".This books stays relatively high level and is philisophical, which makes it an easy read. There are practical examples, but not too many that it disrupts the flow.I am going to buy moe copies for my team. I would highly recommend it to any developer or manager.

As a software engineer, a manger of 20 software engineers, and someone who has mentored dozens of software engineers, I'm putting this on the must read list for everyone who wants to earn how to think about designing software. I just ordered one for the whole team and will set up an in work book club with time away from projects so folks can really focus on the book.The book is well written, well organized, and succinct with solid examples.

Very nice cookbook, tasty recipes, but some of the recipes lack a bit of practical detail. For example, one recipe called for 8 day old bread rolls - which equals how much dry bread? 1 cup, 2 cups? I wanted to use a loaf of dry bread instead - how I do figure out what amount equates to 8 bread rolls? It does make a difference, as then we are told to add 1 cup of warm milk to soften the bread. So I added one cup of milk, but the bread was still hard. Or to add 1/2 bunch of flat parsley, chopped? What is sold as a bunch of parsley at my store may be more or less than at your store! That being said, it is like learning to cook with your wonderful grandma, who would add a bit of this and lots of that, and cook it 'until it is ready'! Even so, what I have tried so far has been very tasty, once I played around with the measurements. For their second edition, the authors might want to consider adding a bit more specificity to some of the recipes, since we don't have a German grandma sitting beside us to tell us that is enough of this and that! I love the format overa, with bios and photos of the grandmas too, and look forward to trying out more of the recipes too.

I'm German and was looking for a gift for my American friend who loves to cook. She asked me a couple of times for German dishes and I always had problems with the translation. So here we are.. in my opinion it's a great book with authentic meals. You won't do anything wrong with this cookbook!

A superb book that preserves our German heritage before it wanes. One trivial criticism; the book contains no recipe for goose, a holiday standard. A word about Spanferkel would help too. Nonetheless, destined to be a classic if not so already.

I love this cookbook! I bought one and then bought four more to give to all the German "Grandmas" in my family. The pictures are lovely (I am a visual learner so I need a picture of whatever it is I am making), the stories and background were interesting and fun to read, and best of all, the recipes are delicious and easy enough for anyone to follow. This is German cooking for everyone, including the two vegetarians in the family.

Recipes are simple to understand and turn out great every time. Also great for beginner cooks like me who are very visual.

If you are looking for a German cookbook, this might be just what you're looking for. There are a lot of authentic, traditional recipes--NOT Americanized. Some of the recipes are from three, four generations back. There are all the German recipes you expect, plus many that you may not be familiar with. There are some old-time techniques also, and that makes for some very interesting times in the kitchen. These are old-time gourmet recipes, NOT new and innovative takes on traditional German food.Besides the authors sharing so many old and very authentic recipes, here are some things I liked about the cookbook: Great pictures of every recipe, very vibrant colors; information on where the recipes originated; interesting stories associated with many of the recipes; most everything is "from scratch" (you won't see any canned goods in the ingredient lists, except maybe a store-bought fresh pasta or bouillon cubes here or there), and I really appreciated the terrific (though few) fruit and veggie jams, butters and pickles.What I didn't like and why I knocked it down a star: It has a very poor index--such a shame. Also, the authors' writing is a bit "home-grown" and in no way sophisticated.I'm still very happy to have this book in my collection. The old recipes are very special, and I greatly appreciate the authors sharing them.

This book really hits the nail on the head. The author is "Peter Temin is an economist and economic historian, currently Gray Professor Emeritus of Economics, MIT and former head of the Economics Department."In economics, models are used to help explain an economy. The models are simplified ways of looking at them. Since they are simplified they miss things making them imperfect. That's always the case with economic models. None of them are perfect but some are better than others.The models he uses in this book is from "W. Arthur Lewis, a professor at the University of Manchester in England, (who) proposed a theory of economic development in a paper published in 1954."He also won a Nobel Prize in Economics for his "pioneering research into economic development research with particular consideration of the problems of developing countries""He noted that development did not progress only country by country, but also by parts of countries. Economic progress was not uniform, but spotty. Ports where merchants organized trade in and out of a county might well grow rich before the country as a whole. Parts of a country might grow apart as a result. Lewis wanted to generalize from examples like this to learn how the parts of such an economy related to each other. Lewis assumed that developing countries often have what has come to be called a dual economy. He termed the two sectors, “capitalist” and “subsistence” sectors. The capitalist sector was the home of modern production using both capital and labor. Its development was limited by the amount of capital in the economy.The subsistence sector was composed of poor farmers where the population was so large relative to the amount of land or natural resources that the productivity of the last worker put to work—called the “marginal product” by economists—was close to zero. The addition of another farmer would not add to the total production. The new worker would be like a fifth wheel on your car."Using this model, the "Lewis Model", explains how things like slums can and do form.The model, when created, was for developing countries.The author takes that idea and applies it to the US. The frightening part is it works pretty well to describe what we are seeing.He starts with US history similarity to Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" tying racism to class and yes we have class in the US along with racism. Having a linkage to racism means it also has loads of difficulties in trying to fix things just like bigotry has. The TV show "Dear White People" does a very good job of outlining some of the difficulties and many of them are shared between the two. I also suggest that TV show.Having those two things tied together means that very rich folks can just have one group fight another group while they get away with loads of things.It goes well beyond just that point to many others that using the model and they all fit pretty well to describe what we are seeing in the US.A model for developing countries is fitting the US, a developed country. Think about that for a second or two.It's a good, well-written book. I definitely suggest folks pick it up and read it.

This is a really important, and reasonably thorough book on this topic (it offers a fair number of reasonably good examples and a fair amount of at least basic data relevant to the conversation), that really offers concrete analysis and synthesis into effects that tend to cavitate the economic spectrum, so that there is an increasing difference between "haves" and "have nots" and a depletion of the middle class. It's an important read, and it dovetails well with important other books on major structural changes in the postmodern economy, such as Westlake & Haskell's Capitalism without Capital, in developed countries generally, but also the US specifically. I really encourage thinking about this as a book that analyzes changes that are happening in developed economies for complex reasons, many of which are not overtly political in a partisan sense, but which require societal and political responses, including organized government responses, many of which are increasingly not happening in the US because of partisan bickering. The bottom line is that: the changes being described in this book are real, solid evidence suggests they are sustained and developing their own inertia, the changes have the potential to cause great human harm, and we have opportunities to manage them and lead society to a better place, if we are willing to do so.

This is an important book-but somehow unsatisfactory, as the peculiarities of America's ghastly history of discrimination parade in the foreground-while the problem advertised in the title-that is the shrinkage or "hollowing out" of the middle classes - is a problem also found in a number of other advanced Western countries which don't have America's history of fraught race relations. He hasn't nailed it. More and better analysis is needed.

Brilliant essay - short (166 pages) and highly readable. And it makes an unexpected, innovative use of the Lewis model of a dual economy that is normally used to explain the challenges faced by developing countries - not a developed, advanced country like the United States. But the model's explanatory power works, and it helps to forcefully highlight what is wrong with both American democracy and the American economy. Professor Temin's book takes Thomas Piketty's famous disquisition on wealth and income inequality in the 21st century one step further and applies it to the American situation today - in the age of Trump.Two major forces, class and race ( "class segregation" and "racecraft" as he calls it) explain how it happened, and the Investment Theory of Politics wraps up the argument. Today the United States is fast becoming a plutocracy in the hands of the finance and tech sector and it is truly a grim prospect. The lights of the "city on the hill" are going out!A must read, highly recommended. Take a close look at the solutions Temin proposes - they make a lot of sense to me, but I fear that many are not politically viable...I have left a question on Goodreads and hope many of you will want to go over there to answer and enter the debate.

This was a very good book, not good for the recipesbut for the pictures, information and menus it was great. 1912 was a time and way of life that money will not buy today. The recipes were not especially useful because some of the food isno longer available, partridges, vegetable marrow, quaileggs and quail. All of the food is fancy and difficult to make.True much of it is available and could be made, but I did not find itespecially appealing.The reader will find a wealth of informationabout the people and the life they lived.

I bought this book a few years ago when planning my epic Titanic Dinner Party. It not only helped, but was a pleasure simply to read. It has more than just the meals; it has history and insights. Further, it is a picture book as well. Sometimes, I use it just to gaze at the pictures.I am planning another epic Titanic Dinner and stole several pic from the book for my 11-page invitations (as to try to entice people to come). I will read through it one last time before setting the table and shopping.

This book is beautiful all around. The writing and information is fantastic and the recipes look exciting to try. This is a Christmas gift for my 10 year old son who is obsessed with ship and titanic and her sister ships. He will be so happy with this book. I have to admit I wasn't sure it would be worth the price I paid but once received I'm more than happy with it and think it was well worth the $ amount. My son will really enjoy this one to add to his collection of titanic memorabilia.

Being a lover of all things Titanic, I couldn't order this book fast enough. The foreword is written by Walter Lord who wrote A Night to Remember. The pictures and paintings alone are worthy of their own book. Printings of the original posters and menus really bring you closer to that time. Now let's get to the recipes! Okay, not all of these recipes are going to be to everybody's taste. If you are hosting a Titanic dinner party I would definitely get together with at least two guests to help pick which menu items to recreate. Of course some people don't care and just want to have the experience of eating what was served on board. My personal favorite is the Chicken Lyonnaise on pg 76. Now this is from the first class menu but we pick things from all of the menus(sometimes we tweak them)to make a dinner. If you want authenticity there are plenty of recipes to plan your perfect Titanic party. I haven't tried all of them and I probably never will. I know the popular thing that is mentioned when talking about dinning on board Titanic is the Lamb with Mint Jelly. Well I am not a fan of either one so that counts me out. There are little facts and historical tidbits before most of the recipes that are very interesting. I recommend this book for all Titanic buffs even if you don't actually plan to cook out of it.

Classic lineup of dishes from 1st to 3rd class on the world famous Titanic ship. Some of the ingredients are hard to come by and expensive but that is expected. Some of the culinary skills required are more than what most people can do. For me, personally this book was exactly what I wanted. It even explains how you would go about hosting dinners using the recipes down to the type of music and attire you should wear.

We have a family member who was actually a Titanic survivor so this book and dinner were especially meaningful. We used some recipes from this book, Chicken Lyonnaise for the main course, was especially tasty. We also had Creamed Carrots, Savory Cranberry Sauce, Chateau Potatoes, Asparagus Salad, and Chocolate Painted Eclairs among other recipes used for our 9 course dinner. Recipes were mostly followed although the eclairs were made by a French woman who didn't follow this recipe. We had several different wines. Used this book as a good guide. Interesting reading.

I bought this book for myself and have now bought another copy for a friend. It's a beautiful book, wonderfully illustrated. It's so interesting to learn about the kitchen and dining aboard the ship. This book contains full menus and recipes of the food served in First, Second and Third class. I highly recommend this book to any Titanic enthusiast.

WERE FILLED WITH COUPLES, DANCE ORCHESTRA, DINING AND A FULL SHOW.THE TRAVELING BURLESQUE TROUPES OF TODAY ARE THE SAME, WAY, TRAVELING TO EUROPE, ASIA, AS WELL AS THE USA; STAFFED WITH COMICS, SINGERS, TAP DANCERS, NOVELTY DANCERS WHO HAVE EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING BURLESQUE ROUTINES., GUARANTEED TO MAKE YOU SMILE WITHOUT GIVING "$20.00 HAND OR BLOW JOBS". YIKES!!!WHAT EVER THE REASON FOR THE AUTHORS TIME, EXPENSE TO PRODUCE A BEAUTIFUL" LOOKING COCKTAIL BOOK, FILLED WITH PHOTOS OF TRAGIC LOOKING" WOMEN IS A SAD MYSTERY.IS IT PORNO? CLOSE.IS IS WORTH ANY PRICE? NONE.. INTERESTED IN THE ART FORM OF BURLESQUE? SKIP THIS BOOK.THE WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHED IN THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER THAN ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BE PORTRAYED IN SUCH A DEGRADING MANNER. .IT'S NOT THAT THE THE WOMEN ARE OLDER. WE ALL GET OLD, OR ELSE WE DIED YOUNG. IT IS T SHOCKING THAT THE WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHED SEEM TO BE UNAWARE OF WHEN THEY REVEAL TYPES OF NASTY ILLEGAL ACTIONS , IF TRUE, FOREVER TAINTS THEIR MEMORY TO ALL WHO READ THIS BOOK.IF THESE SAD TRAGIC WOMEN THINK THIS BOOK PROPELLED THEIR FAME, THEY ARE SADLY MISTAKEN.WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK?THE REAL BURLESQUE STAR OF YESTERDAY AND TODAY ACTUALLY NEVER HEARD OF ANY OF THESE WOMEN INTERVIEWED.IT IS A SHAME THAT THE AUTHORS CHOOSE THE WORST EXAMPLESOF BURLESQUE/ EXOTIC DANCERS( SO CALLED) . TO FEATURE INTHIS POOR EXAMPLE EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN BURLESQUE.SHAME SHAME.SAVE YOUR MONEY.DON'T PUT THIS BOOK ON YOUR COFFEE TABLE, YOU WILL LOSE ALL YIOUR FRIENDS AND LOWER YOUR REPUTATION OF HAVING ANY TASTE WHAT-SO-EVER.THE REAL BURLESQUE PERFORMS IN TODAY'S TRAVELING WORLD-WIDE TROUPS, EARNING A GOOD LIVING, DO NOT SUCH THINGS AS THESE WOMEN HAVE CLAIMED.THESE WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHED AND QUOTED WERE NEVER IN REAL SHOW BUSINESS AND ARE NOT REAL PERFORMERS.Signed by a person who really knows what it's was and is all about..I gave one star, cause I could not give a zero..

I’m glad this book exists. The stories related by these older burlesque performers should be captured for posterity. But much of the book—the first half—is quite dry and academic. I understand that the author’s intention was to examine burlesque through a lens of sociology and anthropology and to compare and contrast it with the neo-burlesque movement, which presents itself differently and may indulge in a fair amount of historical revision. I would have enjoyed the book more if it had more first-person accounts from the dancers, more anecdotes and origin stories, more interviews in general. But I’m glad this book exists and I’ll be delighted to keep it on my coffee table.
