As I have mentioned before, I am a teacher. It is generally frowned upon to say out loud that we have a favorite student, but luckily there is no such decree when it comes to naming a favorite book in a series. Even after reading and re-reading the series often over the years, Tender Rebel remains the one I love over all the others.I think that I always preferred Tony because while he was known to be a charmer and rake, he really was quite multi-faceted. For someone who might come across as frivolous, he could be ruthless and protective, especially for those he cares for. The fact that he was willing to jeopardize his relationship with Roslynn in order to help his best friend find his own HEA spoke volumes as to the hidden depths of Tony.And Roslynn- wow, there were times that she really annoyed me. This perfect man wants to marry and protect you? And you keep jumping to conclusions without giving the man a chance to explain himself? And then, when you realize how silly and wrong you are, you don't apologize? What an idiot!!And then, as I got older and was better at being introspective, I realized- damn, she's as stubborn as I am. No wonder!
Hard to believe how long ago I first read this, maybe evev 30 years! Books have gotten so ratty glad to have Kindle and fonts I can actually see. The Malorys never seem to get old. Love the plots, characters and fun in each. As we first met him as the protective uncle and confirmed bachelor you knew he'd have to fall and fall hard to give up his rake status. Enter the adorable Scot Roselyn and he gone. She is just the right person for him as stubborn and loveable as as he. Their journey has all we need, an inept villain, the couple with strong opinions, and the brothers who can't help putting in their two cents worth. And meeting Nicholas and Reggie again was great. These Malory stories stand the test of time And sure you want to shake them both and say enough already. But they get there. A great read without the "hot and steamy" that seems the norm lately. Now on to James and we already can guess what's coming. Just kick back and enjoy and don't dissect. Kindle editions often full of typos but we get it.
This review is for the audiobook.I was delighted to rediscover the Mallory family in kindle format recently. I was especially excited to know that I could get an audio version of Tender Rebel as I've been having problems with my eyes.Unfortunately I must report I am unable to actually listen to it. Not because of the recording itself but because it is, without doubt, the WORST narration. EVER.Perhaps it would be bearable if the artist chose an accent to use but she apparently can't. She also can't manage either a "Queens English" accent or a Scottish one. Instead, employing a weird mismash of bad Irish and bastadized Southern US accents.What a complete waste of money.
Overall, I like the Malory/Anderson series, but some of these individual books do not show the hero in a good light, if that makes any sense. Literally within minutes of meeting Roslynn, Anthony decides he wants her so he shoves her dress up practically to her waist and pounces on her. He receives the requiste slap afterward, of course.Once they marry, every scene is either a misunderstanding which leads to an argument, or an argument that leads to a misunderstanding. More than 90% of the book is like this. It's difficult to enjoy these kind of novels. There is so much anger & angst between Anthony & Roslynn, I didn't think they would ever get along, so imagine my relief when at the very end they made up & seemed happy & in love.
Love the whole Malory family series! This book being the first in the series leaves you wanting more. I originally read the series by checking out the books from the library but they are so good I am ordering them for my Kindle as I reread them
TENDER REBEL is the second book in the Malory Family series. It is the story of the youngest Malory son Anthony Malory. Readers were introduced to Anthony in LOVE ONLY ONCE. Anthony is a cheerful rake and when he firsts sees Roslynn Chadwick he is determined to have her. Roslynn, however, is looking for marriage to save her from the evil plans odds her cousin who is planning to force her into marriage to steal her fortune. When Anthony and Roslynn end up married to save her, a misunderstanding harms the chance they have at a loving marriage. The two have to overcome the cousin and the misunderstanding on the way to happiness.I love this book. The Malory books are passionate and bold and full of humor. This book is no different. My only complaint is that Roslynn's immediate assumption that causes the misunderstanding between the two grates on my nerves a little, but because Anthony already has lied to her, I can forgive her. The Malory men are rakes but become passionately loving husband when they find the right women. The strong well-defined characters are ones that I have never forgotten even after reading this in the 1980s. this was the first book that I read in the series and I was compelled to read the others and I have re-read them multiple times in the intervening years.The book is not about historical details or intricate plots but rather a bold passionate romance between memorable characters.
