About the Author

The Rev. Dr. James A. Harnish retired after 43 years of pastoral ministry in the Florida Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was the founding pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Orlando and served for 22 years as the Senior Pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Tampa. He is the author of A Disciple’s Heart: Growing in Love and Grace, Earn. Save. Give. Wesley’s Simple Rules for Money, and Make a Difference: Following Your Passion and Finding Your Place to Serve. He was a consulting editor for The New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible and a contributor to The Wesley Study Bible. He and his wife, Martha, have two married daughters and five grandchildren in Florida and South Carolina.

James Harnish has put together a wonderful resource for people in the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition, especially for United Methodists. Participants will explore:1) the goal of Christian discipleship2) the role of grace in discipleship3) the role of spiritual disciplines in discipleship.I would summarize Harnish's view this way: Christians grow in love of God and neighbor through intentional use of spiritual disciplines within the context of a Christian community. While the book has some elements of Methodist history, it is NOT primarily a history class but a guide to what John Wesley called "practical divinity," or practical, experiential Christian faith. Harnish focuses on the spiritual disciplines mentioned in the United Methodist membership vow: prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness.I used this with two different adult groups and both appreciated it. This booklet is the basic group companion. The Daily Workbook is for individual use on a daily basis. Participants should be encouraged to use the daily workbook but not required. The daily workbook is a good resource for discussion leaders to garner discussion material.

This was the most Methodist, most theologically accessible, study I've done in our United Methodist Church for some time. I appreciated the author's approach to Wesleyan theology of a "practical divinity" -- a faith that is both believed and lived out. The long-term Methodists in the group appreciated learning something. And the non-Methodists among us gained an appreciation for Wesley's theology.

This is a really excellent resource for learning what it means to be a disciple in the United Methodist tradition. It explores the membership vows of serving the church with prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness and how to dig deeper into a relationship with Jesus through the spiritual disciplines related to each. I will definitely recommend this to United Methodist churches. I would recommend the daily workbook to go with it.

This is an easy but appropriately challenging study that is appropriate for small groups and Sunday Schools.

This book has taught me so much, both from independent reading as well as sharing insights with the pastor's class on Sunday afternoons. Wow! I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to understand more about grace, the value of fellowship, and how to establish a more fulfilling and intimate prayer life.
