This book is the best source I've found so far for information about historic pharmaceutical practices in the U.S. and western Europe. Old apothecary jars and labels usually have Latin names, or the names are so long out of use, it's nearly impossible to look them up until now. The book is also a great resource for all the other odds and ends of information that useful to a collector of antique pharmaceutical bottles, such as measurement translations and a list of bottle manufacturers. The Historical Apothecary Compendium is great for antique collectors and enthusiasts of pharmacy history.

This is the most complete reference I've seen on antique bottle and terms. I was surprised to see how many color photos and engraving reproductions it has - it makes a great coffee table book.

Lovely reference book but I wonder if the meanings of some of the apothecary symbols were too freely attributed, there being, in some instances many symbols interpreted to have the same meaning.
