About the Author

Zeyn Joukhadar is a Syrian American author and a member of the Radius of Arab American Writers (RAWI) and of American Mensa. Joukhadar’s writing has appeared in Salon, The Paris Review, The Kenyon Review, The Saturday Evening Post, and elsewhere and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and the Best of the Net. Joukhadar is a 2017-2020 Montalvo Arts Center Lucas Artists Program Literary Arts Fellow and a 2019 Artist in Residence at the Arab American National Museum.

A passionate, tender and wise book. Uniting the fates of two young girls from the Islamic world at a Distance of 800 years. Nour is a young Syrian refugee who is forced by war and loss to embark on a journey in which she discovers her strength and her world through a series of losses and acts of courage; the second, Rawiya, leaves home to search for answers to her own life and losses, and finds her fate intertwined with that of Al-iddrissi the prodigious cartographer of the medieval Islamic world. Nour's voice is exquisitely present, her symptoms of synesthesia adding richness to her experience. The language is poetic and the imagery vibrant, at times raw but remarkably not melodramatic. I would have preferred Rawiya's ending chapters to be more concise, but Nour...Nour will continue to live with me for a very long time.

Absolutely stunning, both in writing, setting, and characters. Anyone would love this book, but those looking to better understand Syrian refugees will find it particularly compelling. Appropriate for all ages.

I was reluctant to read this book because the subject is so difficult, the struggles of the Syrian people so horrible. That said, the stories caught my attention and I had trouble putting it down. The melding of the ancient story and the modern day story worked well. I felt empathy for the characters and all refugees. This novel feels important in its rendering of the suffering and resilience of people who leave their homes and countries to survive.

A beautifully woven braid that wraps (1) the horror of war in the Middle East through the travels of a displaced Syrian family, around (2) the wisdom and glory of the golden age of Persia and the cartography Al Idrisi, who created the first world map, and (3) binds these separate truths with the wondrous myths of Scheherazade. An important book for these times. Among my lifetime top ten reads.

I wanted to love this book. It has such a pretty cover and I adore deckle edges. Add a positive blurb from one of my favorite authors and a story topic that is rare in literature these days and my hopes were very high . So much horror is happening in Syria and I was glad someone was writing about it. However I don’t believe the author’s writing was adept enough to capture that horror through the eyes of one family and told first person by a young girl. The chapters alternated with another story from centuries ago about a mapmaker and his apprentice and their harrowing journey to map Syria. It was off putting and made the book seem fanciful. I liked the book but was also disappointed. Perhaps this topic was too much for the author.

This has to be one of my favorite novels of the past year. The storytelling is magical, and the writing is achingly lyrical. Nary a dull, ordinary sentence in the whole book. Each of the two stories that parallel one another -- one present time, one a fable from centuries earlier -- could stand alone on their own. But intertwined as they are, they reinforce one another perfectly. It's hard to believe this is the author's first novel. I can't wait to see what she writes next.

I have had my fill of novels with two overlapping or parallel stories. It's time to move on to another style. The writing in this particular novel is neither exceptional nor is the plot. I gave this book my 100-page test and it just never captured my interest.

This book was riveting. I couldn’t put it down. The journey, the characters...it blows my mind to think of what Syrian refugees must endure.
