About the Author

Natsume Soseki (1867–1916) is one of the great writers of the modern world. Educated at Tokyo Imperial University, he was sent to England in 1900 as a government scholar. As one of the first Japanese writers to be influenced by Western culture, his various works are widely read in Japan, and contemporary authors in Japan continue to be influenced by his oeuvre, which also includes The Gate, I Am a Cat, Sanshiro, and The Three Cornered World.Edwin McClellan is Professor of Japanese Literature at Yale University. His translation of Kokoro, presented here, has been selected for the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works.

We have here a deeply sensuous and internal story concerned with a transitional period in Japan when it began to discard traditional Confucian societal guidelines and be increasingly influenced by Western values.The plot circulates around a callow college student and his relationship with a seemingly misogynistic older man who lives an isolated life devoid of companionship except that of his wife and increasingly the young student.Dominating plot is psychological character development based on the feeling of loneliness and self-ostracization due to guilt. Soseki, at the time he wrote this novel, was exploring the fractures in Japanese society at the end of the Meiji period and the influx of Western modes of thinking about social constructs and norms.Regarding thematic development and character analysis as an allegory for Japan on the threshold of seismic change, the novel is a masterpiece. But it is not without its faults. As a construction, the three parts are clunky and disunified. The writing is minimalistic but not individualistic so that it's hard to separate Soseki's style/signature as an author from other minimalist Japanese authors, say Kawabata, and the prose lacks an element of ethereal beauty that seems required.

Kokoro translates as 'the heart of things'. Natsume Soseki's eponymous novel is as many of his narratives, told First Person by an unnamed university student, who herein has chosen to entrust his spiritual, philosophical development into the hands of a character solely and appropriately referred to as Sensei. As much as our narrator reveres Sensei, there is a reserve about him that frustrates any attempt at true connection. University schedules take our hero away from Tokyo for an extended period, and after a few unanswered missives hopeful of advice, finally a massive reply comes, (one that occupies more than the latter half of the book) Sensei confiding his past, how it has shaped him, how it has left him someone who lives in spite of life, how his history and fate might be taken as a lesson to a younger man and to all of us.Soseki's Anglophilia that infused I Am A Cat with the superlative English satire of Sterne and Swift, here is driven by the Exquisite Unsaid, insight worthy of Henry James into the meditations and evolutions that eventually inform every act, every decision. And I maintain that Victorian reserve has got nothing on Meiji Era reserve.I came to Soseki through his great good humour. This is Soseki immersed and invoking the darkest essence at The Heart of Things.

An exceptional literary work, reminded me of The Great Gatsby in certain ways.Like that book, it has that particular melancholy not uncommon in 20th Century novels.Also a very intriguing glimpse of Japanese life in a certain time period.

Kokoro is a beautifully quiet and poignant novel. If you enjoy contemplative novels, novels that force you to do some of the work, rather than ones that spoon feed you and you also value cultures, relationships, and the ideals of duty, pity, guilt, and endurance, then this novel is for you. I wish I had learned of Nastume Soseki in my undergraduate or graduate literature studies; nevertheless, I am very happy to have stumbled upon this author now and am looking forward to reading his other works.

If you don't know this novel or it's author, Natsume Soseki, then read this tremendous novel. Soseki was born in Tokyo in 1867, one year before Japan entered the Meiji period. He is considered to be the first "modern" Japanese novelist. What does this mean? In his forward to another Soseki novel, SANSHIRO, the author Haruki Murakami writes:"Most of his protagonists face real-life contradictions. They experience anguish over how they ought to live, and are confronted with real-life decisions that are being forced upon them. They struggle earnestly to find where they stand amid the competing demands of the pre-modern and the modern, between love and morality, between the West and Japan."The novel focuses on the relationship between two men: one older and one recently graduated from university, making his way in the world for the first time. Sensei, as the younger man refers to his older friend, is a product of a different time. And unlike his older friend, the younger man is entering a period of Japanese ascension towards a more modern way of living.How riveting is this novel, and how masterful a storyteller is Soseki? Consider this: more than half the novel, a full half, is in the form of a letter from one party to another. And for the entire time I read this riveting epistolary portion of the novel, I could not move except to delve further. I could barely take a breath again until I reached it's end.A masterpiece of writing from a masterful storyteller......

It takes a certain frame of mind to read and appreciate what Soseki brought to literature. There are times when the narrator or Sensei's actions will make very little sense to the western way of thinking and other times when you just feel like slapping Sensei, especially in the evolution of his love story and the obvious consequences of his actions. But there's a beauty in its simplicity that covers up so much meaning buried in the pages of this story, which at the heart is about loneliness and explores the reasons why no matter how hard we try we can never fully give ourselves to one another.

A remarkable, touching story. Hauntingly beautiful. First person narrative, shifts over to another perspective in second half. It is a sad story, with a deep moral sense for suffering.

"Kokoro" which literally means heart in japanese takes place during Japan's transition from the Meiji era to a modernized society. The book progresses slowly but each page is full of thought and I often had to reread it to find the meaning behind it. The book's main character is in my opinion very egoistic for my liking but other than that the book questioned beliefs and gave a perspective at the changing values during Japan's transition. I would recommend this book to anyone and I plan on reading it again 9/10
