Having boarded this train early, I found out pretty quickly that the plots are not simple, the character interaction and relationships are complicated and, most importantly: I need to pay attention. Each book in the series could probably stand alone. I'll never know. It has been fun becoming gradually acquainted with the prime characters not only professionally but their personal lives and seeming progress in their work. I have realized that much of the storey and its progression is accomplished through the vehicle of conversation as opposed to purely narration. I actually wonder if and when a particularly interesting character from earlier books might again appear. If you have not read any of this series, please start with the first. The author brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his stories, the origin of which I know not. Just stumbled on DIVIDED HOUSE thinking it might be about the American Civil War. Fear the Past is not a novel of red herrings a'plenty. Those novels have their place, but Mr. Dalgliesh's approach is subtle and when various findings are at last revealed, one is inclined to take in a soft breath and softly sigh. This is a plot driven story and, while not character driven, each character is perfectly "cast." The lead character is definitely not free of faults, those faults largely understandable to the reader. However, those faults do create tension and are realistic. The story itself is very good, with the reader trying to make connections as the constabulary seeks to do likewise,. This process is almost an interactive process. The developments, complicated though they seem, are surprising in the basic humanity ultimately unmasked. Waiting for Book 6 as there is much still to be learned about our DI Nate Caslin.
I've enjoyed all of The Dark Yorkshire Thrillers. They are well written,easy to follow, the main characters all seem real, I wish I could visit them.. my only question is does England ever have nice sunny days
Once again J M Dalgliesh has written a really gripping story. The book is well thought out and well written. There were a few surprises that I did not expect. Highly recommended for anyone who really enjoys a great crime thriller.
Again the storyline keeps the reader intrigued. Some thinks made me take a breath...just when you think things will work out...Bam!Eagerly awaiting a continuation.....
While I really enjoyed the way the earlier books introduced the characters, this latest book from Dalgliesh rounds them out nicely and you get a true sense of a fully functional team tackling the problems that are thrown their way. I loved the individual plots that circle around and then take many twists and turns before you can fully understand the complexity of the whole situation. Dalgliesh dangles clues along with red herrings as you delve deeper into the book. I started the book in the morning, even forgot lunch as I really didn’t want to put this book down until it was finished.
... but I was unable to handle the poor grammar that peppers the pages. The author is not able to structure sentences in their correct grammatical manner, so I will not know how good the plot might be.
The man can write. I take great pleasure in reading a well written storey. The storey line is engrossing and fast paced. He is able to accomplish this without resorting to obscenities or profanity . I have all books in this series and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Give them a try. I believe you'll be glad you did.
